There were some tough battles, spectacular plays, stout defence and sound offence last Sunday - but in the end no surprises - as the top four seeds in the 2015 AFFL FlagBowl playoffs advanced to the semi-finals tomorrow at Wright Field. Can the top seeded Agents prevent the #4 Big Dogs from advancing to their fourth straight AFFL title game? Can the two time defending champion Golden Beavers beat the upstart Untouchables to go for three in a row? Questions, questions, questions.
Things got underway with the wild card games as #7 Warriors took on #10 Team Green. Both offences had chances to score, with the Warriors taking advantage of their opportunities to prevail 30-7, with three dropped passes in the end zone by Team Green proving to be their downfall. The other wildcard game saw the #8 Bandits take on #9 Bruzers. In the only upset of the day, the Bruzers put in a stellar effort to win 20-7 and prevent the Bandits from advancing to their first ever quarter-final appearance.
The reward for winning the wildcards was a back-to-back game against a top seed. For the Bruzers, this meant taking on the top ranked Agents. The Bruzers battled hard, but in the end couldn't match the fresher Agents squad as the Agents won by a 26-7 count. The Warriors took on the #2 Beavers for the second straight year and played them tough. Teams traded scores in the first half, with a pick-six by Arturo Profetti providing the difference in a 17-9 halftime lead for the Beavers. Both defences played great in the second half, with the Beavers getting a early field goal and holding a 20-9 lead late in the game when Mark Whelan intercepted a misfired Marty Patience pass to give the Beavers the ball at the Warrior 10 yard line. The Warriors held for four downs, but couldn't stop a 5th down ball to Rory O'Connor that sealed the 26-9 win for the defending champs.
In other action, four touchdowns by Damon McLachlan - two in the air, one on a punt return and another on a 100 yard pick six - paced the Big Dogs to a 35-8 win over the Redskins. The Big Dogs defence intercepted Redskins QB Neil Perry four times in the win.
Four interceptions by Dave Presenza proved to be the difference as the Untouchables defeated the Jokers 30-15 to advance to the semi-finals.
So, consolation action on Sunday will see the Jokers take on the Warriors while the Redskins play the Bruzers. Championship semi-finals will pit the Agents against the Big Dogs and the Golden Beavers against the Untouchables.
