WEEK 1: UNTOUCHABLES SURVIVE SHOOTOUT TO TAKE WIN

The Alliston Flag Football League kicked off it's 35th season on Sunday and it looks as though the Big Dogs and Golden Beavers are poised to be dominant again.   But the Untouchables showed they may be poised to join the conversation as title contenders, along with the defending regular-season champion Agents.

The 2015 champion Big Dogs got off on the right foot with a convincing 25-0 win over Bandits,  who entered the game at 1-0 thanks to a forfeit win over the Jokers.  The Golden Beavers moved to the top of the standings at 2-0 with a 39-0 win over Team Green and a 32-3 win over an undermanned Bruzers squad.   The Agents started in style with a 30-3 win over the Warriors.    The last game of the day proved to be the best one, with the sophmore Untouchables taking on the revamped Redskins.

Both teams traded touchdowns and interceptions in the first half before a late Redskins TD gave them an 18-10 lead.  But the tables turned in a hurry in the second half.   Newly acquired Mike Nielzeruk, who played with the Warriors last year, kicked a FG to cut the gap to 18-13 and then Mike Presenza returned an interception 60 yards for a TD and a 19-18 lead.   Presenza then picked off another Neil Perry pass which set up another FG.  The Untouchables third interception of the half by Sam Totty set up a TD strike from QB Trevor Wood to Jake Moulton and gave the Untouchables a commanding 30-19 lead.  Or so it seemed.

The Redskins stormed back to get to Untouchables 2 yard line with six plays left in the game.  Needing two scores to tie, they elected to go for the field goal instead of the touchdown on 5th down - forgetting that if they made the FG the Untouchables would have the option of taking the ball at their 35 yard line instead of having the Redskins kick from their own 35, negating any possible on-side kick attempt.    The FG was good, Untouchables downed the ball and a bewildered Redskins team fell short by a 30-22 count.
