AFFL SET TO LAUNCH 38TH SEASON

Sunday marks the opening day of the 2019 Alliston Flag Football League season, marking the 38th year of play for the league.   Eight teams will hit the grid-iron from now until mid-November, culminating in Flag Bowl 2019 on November 16th as teams compete for the coveted John Boylan Cup.

The Golden Beavers look to defend their title this season and tie the Sorcerers for the most championships in league history.  But the veteran squad will face some challenges in repeating.  The Untouchables proved last season that they can light up the scoreboard and are poised to take the next step.  The Big Dogs still have plenty of bark, having appeared in six of the last 7 championship games and are hungry to get back after missing out last season. The Warriors look to parlay a surprise final four appearance and young corps into something more. The Agents lurk in the shadows, ready to pounce on anyone taking them too lightly.  Team Green and the Bandits look to keep the consistency in their games that make them a threat to beat anyone.  And the retooled Jokers may just have the last laugh.

It all starts Sunday with four games.  The league's best rivalry is rekindled with the Golden Beavers putting their 11 game win streak on the line against the Big Dogs at 10:30  while the Agents look to avenge last year's quarter final upset loss to Warriors as the two teams square off at noon.  All games are at Banting HS.

In Brief:    It is too bad that all good things must come to an end.A franchise with ties all the way back to the league's beginning has folded.  The Bruzers - originally the Alliston 89ers in 1982, had to pack up their tent this season after a long run.  The team claimed on AFFL title and with long time QB Brian Cook at the helm, were the originators of the bombs away football that makes this league great.  John Boylan - for whom the championship trophy has been named - was a stalwart with the team as well - the epitome of class, hard work and fun.

Much like the 89ers/Bruzers franchise itself.

They will be missed, but here's hoping players who still wanted to continue have latched on with some other teams, making those teams and the league as a whole stronger in the process.
