They're baaaaaack! But do the defending champion Big Dogs have enough bite left to keep the Golden Beavers from taking the 2013 AFFL Championship? We'll see at Flag Bowl 2013 on Saturday November 16th.
The Beavers entered the playoffs as the top seed, finishing in first place with an 8-1 record. Last week they defeated the Shock in the quarter-finals and suprisingly found themselves matched against the Bruzers in the semi-finals thanks to the Bruzers huge upset win over the Agents in the quarters last week. However, the Bruzers had no such magic this week and the Beavers took the semi-final to advance to the championship.
The Big Dogs had a much tougher road, both in the regular season and playoffs. At one point, the defending champs were 2-4, but took their last two regular season games to finish in 5th place. Quarter-final action saw the Big Dogs win a see-saw affair against the up and coming Redskins by a 29-21 count. This week, the Dawgs took on the Jokers in a rematch of last year's final. This game was not a repeat of last year's blowout championship win, with both teams battling right down to the wire. The Dogs took the lead late and withheld a last ditch effort by the Jokers to pull ahead, taking the semi-final and earning a shot at a second consecutive championship.
This game will come down to defence and special teams. The Beavers record-setting D held the Big Dogs offence in check during a regular season win - can they do it again? Will the Dogs be able to hold the Beavers offence in check? Will the Spataro brothers kick return trio run wild? Will the Graham brothers kick the Beavers to victory? We'll get all the answers Saturday at 2pm at Wright Field.
AFFL Flag Bowl 2013 festivities start at 10 am Saturday with the "C" Championship game between the Agents and the Warriors, followed at noon by the "B" Championship between the Jokers and the Bruzers and the "A" Championship for the John Boylan Memorial Trophy at 2pm between the Big Dogs and Beavers. The annual AFFL Banquet will follow at 7pm at the Old Alliston Arena.
