After Week 2 of the 2014 AFFL season, the Agents looked poised to be legitimate contenders for the AFFL title, while the Jokers recovered from an opening week dismantling with two impressive wins. Meanwhile, last year's finalists the Golden Beavers and the Big Dogs are a combined 1 and 3. There's a long way to go, but thing have sure gotten interesting early.
Mike Melo's Agents have long been a team of great promise, but have held the moniker of "best team never to win a title" for a long time now. However, they served notice that they are looking to get rid of that label this year. It started in Week 1 with an impressive 31-9 win over the 2012 AFFL finalist Jokers and was announced loudly last Sunday as the Agents soundly defeated the defending champion Golden Beavers 38-14. QB Jay Cunningham is distributing the ball to a variety of targets and the team has 5 interceptions in two games. All in all, a great start to the season against two superb opponents.
The Jokers, meanwhile, recovered from a Week 1 defeat to take both ends of a doubleheader in Week 2. First, the Jokers got a small measure of revenge for their 2012 championship game defeat by trouncing the Big Dogs 42-6. After adding former Shock QB Greg Moore and speedy Shock reciever Rob Hellyer to the squad, the Big Dogs have reloaded for another title run. But the loss put them at 0-2 after a Week 1 32-21 loss to the Bruzers - certainly not the start the Dawgs wanted, but it is a long season. The Joker then took down the newly-formed Team Green (formerly Shock) 40-6. Former Shock standout Curtis Shakespeare was big contributor, with 3 TDs and 3 interceptions in two games and is a key replacement for Chris Verstratten, who has been sidelined after achilles tendon surgery.
Neil Perry's Redskins have quietly kept pace with the league leaders after two wins to open the season as well. In Week 1, a last play TD and 2 pt convert gave the 'Skins a 24-23 win over the Warriors and last week Perry and his mates defeated the Bruzers in a shootout 41-30.
In other action Week 2 action, the veteran Warriors managed to recover from their last second loss to the 'Skins with a tough 33-24 win over the Bandits. In other Week 1 action, the Beavers overcame a slow start against the Bandits to pull away in the second half for a 39-9 win while Team Green recorded it's first franchise victory in the AFFL by grinding out a 20-11 win over the Bandits.
All in all, an interesting start to the 2014 season, proving once again that on any given Sunday in the AFFL, anything can happen.
