The 2019 AFFL season got underway last Sunday with close games all around - and a couple of surprises. While the Big Dogs served notice that they are very much in the championship conversation, Team Green had their biggest win in franchise history and like keeping company with some of the usual suspects at the top of the table to start the season.
The defending AFFL champion Beavers opened defense of their title against their arch rivals, the Big Dogs. And as always, the game was a classic see saw battle.
The game went back and forth, with the champs holding a lead in the second half before the Dogs went ahead 14-13. On the next possession, Neil Perry threw an interception that Adam Spataro returned for a TD that effectively sealed the game for the Big Dogs, who went on to win 24-13. The win ended the Beavers 11 game win streak and served noticed that the Big Dogs are primed to take another run at the title.
Team Green met up with a retooled Jokers squad and demonstrated a consistency that has eluded them in past years. A revamped Jokers squad, featuring new QB Jake Morrison and former Bruzer standout Andre Plante couldn't quite find their stride while Team Green put up 3 TDs, a two point convert and a FG to record their biggest win in franchise history 23-17. With the win, Team Green matches their win total from last year and has a share of first place for the first time ever.
In other action, the Agents with Jay Cunningham back at QB beat the Warriors 28-14 while Trevor Wood tossed 3 TDs in hardfought 23-18 win over the tough Bandits. Jason Campeau's two single points and FG proved to be the difference for last year's finalists.
IN BRIEF: With the Agents 28 points being the most scored last week by any team, it marks the first time this century that the league did not have one team score at least 30 points in a game. First week rust or is defense improving overall for everyone? Guess time will tell...the Jokers not only picked up Andre Plante from the Bruzers, but have also added QB Brian Cook to their roster. This will be the 38th year for Cook being on an AFFL roster, a record that will never be broken. When the Jokers work Plante and Cook into the lineup, they will be a darkhorse to contend, this week's loss not withstanding...League rosters have been increased from 18 to 20 this year in an effort to encourage teams to pick up players from the defunct Bruzers squad who still want to play. The Jokers have jumped on board, and with only 7 players showing up last week, the Bandits may be primed to add a few as well.
