As the AFFL enters the last week of the 2019 season, two marquee games will serve as potential semi-final previews, while the other two games will determine who grabs 6th place and a slightly more favourable quarter-final match-up next weekend. But for all teams, it is a late season litmus test of where their games are at before the playoff action separates the contenders from the pretenders.
The Agents are looking to finish the season 7-0 when they take on the defending champion Golden Beavers on Sunday. The Agents have clinched first place thanks to a thrilling 35-28 win over the Big Dogs last weekend. After trailing 24-13 at half, the Agents outscored the Dawgs 22-4 the rest of the way to take game and the regular season title. For the Beavers, who have reeled off three straight wins, the game will be a measuring stick as it seeks to defend its title starting next week. The Beavers are locked in to either 4th or 5th place regardless - meaning that these two teams could meet again in the semi-finals in two weeks time.
The other big game features the Untouchables against the Big Dogs. It's a rematch of last year's semi-final which the Untouchables won impressively. The Untouchables have rebounded from their only loss of the season to the Agents with two straight wins in which their offence has averaged 33 pts/game. At 5-1 they have clinched second place. The Big Dogs are reeling a bit after losing two games in a row and will certainly be looking to get back on track heading into the playoffs. The Dawgs have clinched 3rd place. Again - this game is potential preview of a semi-final tilt in two weeks time.
The final two games will impact playoff positioning as well, with the Jokers taking on the Bandits and Team Green battling the Warriors. A Bandits win over the Jokers clinches 6th place for them. The Jokers, whose lone win so far was a 29-16 win over the Big Dogs, will finish 6th with a win and a Team Green loss. Team Green will finish 6th with a win and a Jokers loss. That leaves the Warriors, who with a win will clinch 4th and a loss will finish 5th - and regardless will face a quarter-final match up with the Golden Beavers next Sunday.
