In 2001, the Jokers took the AFFL by storm enroute to their first AFFL title and looked poised to win many more. It took 11 years, but the team finally has a shot at another championship after a last second semi-final win over the Agents.
To win it all, they will have to beat the Big Dogs - an athletic, talented upstart squad eerily similar to that 2001 Jokers team - who upset the top ranked Golden Beavers in semi-final action last week.
The Jokers and Big Dogs will play to see who wins it all in Flag Bowl 2012 this Saturday at 2 pm at Wright Field in Alliston.
Flag Bowl festivities get underway Saturday at 10 am with the "Bubba Bowl" Consolation Championship game that will feature the resurgent Warriors taking on the expansion Redskins. Warriors have won four of their last 6 games while the Redskins have won 5 of 6. Both lost close quarter-final games earlier this month. The Warriors took the regular season match up 15-13. The Warriors advanced with a tough 18-16 win over the Bruzers, while the Redskins dispatched the five time defending AFFL champion Shock in the other consolation semi-final.
This is followed at 12 noon by the "B" Championship, which will feature an excellent match up between the Agents and Beavers. Finally, the John Boylan Memorial Cup A Championship will pit the Jokers against the Big Dogs at 2 pm.
The day wraps up with the annual AFFL Banquet at 7:00 pm at the Alliston Memorial Arena.
Week 2 Semi-Final Update
Jokers 29 Agents 27
For the second week in a row, the Jokers needed some last second heroics to seal the deal. Last week, Jeff Verstratten's field goal iced a 25-20 win against the Warriors. This week, Verstratten delivered again. The Jokers held an 18-9 half-time lead that quickly evaporated as the Agents scored on their opening drive, the returned an interception for a TD to go up 21-18. The Jokers responded with a TD to regain the lead 26-21, but the Agents stormed back and scored on a bomb to take a 27-26 lead with 3 plays left. The Jokers moved the ball to the Agents 47 yard line with one play left and called on Verstratten and his leg once again. He nailed the field goal for the win, break the Agents hearts - and send the Jokers back to the AFFL final for the first time since 2001.
Big Dogs 31 Beavers 13
It took 19 years - and a change of teams - but Big Dogs quarterback Chad Cox is back in the AFFL final. After 18 years as a receiver and QB with the now defunct Bombers, Cox joined the Big Dogs as a receiver and back up QB this year and now finds himself at the helm of one of the league's most potent offences with a shot at second AFFL title. The Big Dogs speed proved to be a difference maker as Damon McLaughlin scored two touchdowns, including one off one of his two interceptions, and Jeremy Osbourne added two more while Igor Jankovich kicked four singles and a field goal to pace the Big Dogs to a huge 31-13 win over the Beavers, who have appeared in the last two AFFL Finals. With the win, the Big Dogs first appearance in the AFFL final
