27-year veteran Sterling Ivany (l) with son and AFFL rookie Connor on opening day of the 2015 season |
On the opening Sunday of the 2015 season this past weekend, that day finally came.
The long- time VP-Admin stepped on the field with his son Connor as part of the Warriors defense against the Agents this past Sunday.
"It was just great," Ivany said. "Connor and I are really looking forward to playing together this year, and I might get to play with my youngest son Duncan in a game or two as well."
"It's a great way to finish up my playing days in the AFFL after 27 years."
The Ivanys aren't the first father/son combo to play in the AFFL - and won't be the last. As the league enters its 34th season, with players ranging in age from their 20s to their 50s, it's part of what makes the AFFL the self-proclaimed "the best league in town."
As for the game itself, coming out on the losing end of a 44-13 score to the high flying Agents was a bit of a rude awakening for the rookie Ivany. "I told Connor it would be a track meet playing those guys - and it sure was!", says Sterling. "But it was a ton of fun to finally get to play with him."
