Two games came down to the last play on Sunday, with the Jokers and Eagles snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. The Jokers - fittingly - had the last laugh after dodging a bullet with 6 plays left against the Warriors, while for the second week in a row the Eagles won on the last play of the game.
The Jokers matched up against the Warriors without standout QB Ricardo Hoyos. The new look Warriors with Marty Patience at the helm, held a 16-12 halftime lead and were poised to add to it early in the second half only to miss a TD on 5th down. On the ensuing play, Jeff Verstratten took a swing pass 80 yards for the go ahead score. The Warriors drove again only to have another 5th down attempt thwarted, but an interception by Dave Roque gave the Warriors great field position which Patience converted into a TD to John Smalley for a 24-20 lead. With 6 plays left, the Warriors had the apparent clinching TD dropped in the endzone, giving the Jokers one last shot. On 4th down from midfield, Chris Verstratten ran for a 25 yard gain and on the last play QB Jason Verstratten threw a tight pass in the endzone that was tipped by safety Joss Ross but snared by Jeff Verstratten for his 3rd TD of the game - and the unlikely win.
The Eagles, who defeated the Warriors in Week 1 on a last play TD, overcame a revamping Jager Bombers squad. Rebounding from a Week 1 shellacking at the hands of the Beavers, the Bombers held an 18-14 lead thanks to 15 points from standout Derek Lubert. But just like the week before, the Eagles drove on their last series, scoring a TD on the last play of the game to win 20-18.
Both the Jokers and Eagles now move to 2-0.
