WEEK 5 RECAP: UNTOUCHABLES, BEAVERS STAY PERFECT

Week 5 action saw two barnburner games that almost threw a wrench into the much anticipated Untouchables- Beavers showdown slated for Week 6.  But in the end, both teams managed to keep their perfect records intact - setting up a battle for first place to kick off Week 6 action on Sunday.

First off was a rematch of last year's championship game between the defending champion Big Dogs and the Golden Beavers.  The Dawgs knew they needed a win to stay in contention for a shot at first place overall and came ready to play.  The Beavers, conversely, could not get their high powered offence rolling early on and the game became a defensive struggle, with the Dogs shutting out the Beavers in the first half but only tallying once themselves to hold an 8-0 halftime lead.   In the second half, the Beavers finally got on the board to close the gap to 8-6, then got a timely interception on the Dawgs next series to set up a go ahead TD and get a 14-8 lead.  The champs responded in kind by marching downfield and punching in another to go back ahead 16-14.  After stopping the Beavers again, the Dawgs marched midway into Beavers territory and on 4th down Ryan Spataro just missed Damon McLachlan with what would have been a deal-sealing TD.   Instead of punting to pin the Beavers deep with only 6 plays to go, the Big Dogs elected to go for a field goal and missed.   The single point gave the Big Dogs a 3 point lead, but gave the Beavers the ball at their own 35 yard line.   Facing 4th down at the Big Dog 50, Neil Perry aired out a ball to the Big Dog 10 yard line and got a pass interference call that gave the Beavers a shot.  Two plays later, Perry found Curtis Shakespeare wide open for the go-ahead score and the 20-17 victory.

Meanwhile,  the Untouchables faced the Agents in a game that was a lot closer than might have been expected. The Untouchables scored on their first possession then proceeded to intercept Agent QB Shane Spencer 3 times in the first half, but the Agent defence held strong and the offence got a field goal to stay within striking distance as the Untouchables took a 15-3 lead into the half.  The second half saw veteran QB Jay Cunningham at the helm and he led the Agents to a quick score to close the gap to 15-9. But the Untouchables responded with a long bomb to Jason Campeau followed by his 3rd TD catch of the day to increase the gap to 23-9.  The Agents came right back to score again,  missing the converty to make it a 23-15 ball game.  A late single gave the Untouchables a 9 point lead with 6 plays remaining and the Agents mounted one last charge, punching in a TD but missing the 2 point convert to get to 24-21.   An on-side kick failed, ending the game a keeping the Untouchables perfect.

In other action, the Big Dogs rebounded to end their two game losing streak by defeating the Warriors 34-19; the Jokers won their second in a row with a tough 10-8 win over Team Greeen; and the Bruzers won 21-0 by forfeit over the Bandits.
